Baptism is necessary for salvation because 1 Peter 3:21 also says “baptism . . . now saves you.” Jesus as the only Savior uses the waters of baptism to save people from their sins. Further, our Lord once said, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mark 16:16).
When Jesus said that you must be “born of water,” what was he referring to? Natural birth? That would be equivalent to him saying that you have to be a human being to enter the kingdom—as opposed to being an animal or something else—which seems unnecessary. It seems more natural to read his words as meaning that you have to be “born of water” in some deeper sense.
I don’t believe that water has some inherent power to forgive. It is a symbol, as some say, but it is also more than a symbol. Otherwise, what Ananias said to Paul makes no sense, “be baptized and wash away your sins.”
Having said this, do I believe God can save apart from baptism? There are examples in the Old Testament where God acted outside of His plans, so I don’t see why he can’t today. This is where I draw the line with the hyper-Church of Christ conservatives. They are quick to point out that if one is not baptized “purposely” for remission of sins that the person being baptized is just being dunked in water, despite his faith in Jesus and despite his turning from self to Jesus. Strange they always leave off rest of Acts 2:38 “and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” I don’t know too many Church of Christ folk being baptized with that “purpose” in mind. Luke records remission and the gift of the Spirit as something received at baptism, so if we are to make one invalid when not properly understood, we must do so with the other. Thus, the reason I disagree with the Church of Christ ultra-conservatives.
I use the word “symbol” with caution. To say that baptism is “just a symbol” takes away from the depth and beauty of water baptism. Baptism is a symbol, but it is so much more than that.
When we are saved, we are spiritually baptized into Christ (Galatians 3:27,) and into His Body , the church (1 Corinthians 12:13.) Water represents inner cleansing (Ephesians 5:26, Hebrews 10:22,) and spiritual rebirth (John 3:5,) both of which are central themes of baptism.
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”- Romans 6:4
“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.”-Colossians 2:12
Being baptized is a command from God, not an option. It is an act that God requires of every believer.

Today many Churches view baptism as a way to join the church and some see it as a necessary component of salvation while others say it is optional.
Scripture seem to support a connection between baptism and remission. I don’t wish to make faith in baptism, but it does seem to be an act of faith, that should be centered around Jesus and His work.
We must not make baptism “a work” far as something we do to get remission, but something we do is response to Jesus providing remission. Just as we repent in response to faith in Christ, so we should with baptism. We acknowledge that Jesus is the gospel and we simply respond in faith.

Water baptism does not save us it is a symbol of our faith it symbolizes what He has already done in us. We are water baptism symbolizes that Jesus died was buried and rose again, water baptism symbolizes that we no longer want to live to sin but want to live for Jesus.
Jesus was trying to explain to Nicodemus who was thinking of being born in the physical sense that he also needed to be born again of the Spirit. Jesus told Nicodemus that which is born of flesh is flesh, and that which is born of Spirit is spirit and repeats that Nicodemus needed to be born again.
John 3:6-7 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.”
Jesus was saying we must be born again of the Spirit.
It is clear Nicodemus was thinking of being born in the sense of physical birth. Jesus didn’t tell Nicodemus to be baptized to be born again as some want it to say. Right after Jesus’ reference to born of water and Spirit Jesus speaks of two births a physical birth and a Spirit birth and born again is the second birth of the Spirit. The entire context of their conversation in John 3 is about two births the context itself reveals that the water meant physical birth.
Jesus’ redeeming blood takes away sins. Jesus’ Sacrifice on the cross is sufficient to take away our sins.

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.
Ephesians 3:13
“But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”
Colossians 1:13-14
He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Hebrews 9:14
“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
1 Peter 1:18-19
“Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”

1 Peter 3:21, (not the removal of filth from the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God).
Our sins are washed away-taken away by the redeeming blood of Jesus. We are baptized into Christ with the baptism of His Holy Spirit. Being baptized with the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean our flesh will no longer sin while on earth but is the answer of a good conscience toward God our conscience being regenerated and renewed with the baptism of His Holy Spirit.
Titus 3:4-5
“But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 12:13
“For by one Spirit we are baptized into one body-whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free-and have been made to drink into one Spirit.”
Faith comes before baptism thus it is our faith/trust that Jesus is our Savior our Messiah that saves us it is Jesus’ Redeeming blood that removes our sins. John the Baptist proclaimed that he baptized with water but that Jesus will baptize us with the Holy Spirit, “There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. I indeed baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” I believe we are buried in Him and raised up again with the baptism of the Holy Spirit Jesus baptizes us with. I believe Jesus Himself is our Redeemer. The one baptism is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is essential.
Rather than we both presenting lengthy comments, coving everything, perhaps we take smaller steps. Lets start with an old favorite – Acts 2:38. Please state your position and I will comment.

Never, not once have I stated “water washes away sin” nor do I know anyone who has said such. Only the Blood of Jesus can wash away sins! You say this washing occurs at faith only or at repentance but you fail to say what Peter says. Peter says the washing occurs at repenting and baptism in Acts 2:38. Before you jump to Cornelius, I agree.
Even when Peter says “baptism saves us” he didnt mean the water had saving power….it is by the risen Lord as he says in that same verse.
Nobody ever said water is our salvation or the agent of salvation….

Truth, my position on Acts 2:38, is that Peter answered the cry of those who ask “what shall we do.” Faith in Jesus-the Gospel is what prompt their question and being pricked in their hearts further demonstrates that they surely had faith in the gospel Peter preached prior to repenting and prior to being baptized.
Luke recorded the Acts of the Apostles and in his own gospel ties repentance to remission of sins. Did Luke, at that point understand Jesus would die and rise again? Did Luke, in his gospel understand that Jesus would shed his blood “for the remission of sins?”
Luke recorded Peters words that one must repent and be baptized, right?
The word “AND” used by Peter puts baptism on equal ground with repentance, right?
Having stated my position does not mean I exclude anyone who disagrees. So, please don’t make comments saying I am siding with Mr. Robertson on doctrine, when we clearly do not agree on this.
God made plans in the OT, that he changed for some. Did David follow Gods plan to obtain forgiveness? Did he offer an animals blood to God like God had commanded of the people then? There are other examples too.
The Jews were stuggling with the fact that they may just have crucified the Christ the Messiah. Peter didn’t know if all 3000 had repented thus he still told them to repent.
I presented David as an excpetion – when did God say he could be an exception? God has always been a God of exceptions.
Sure the Jews were feeling bad and guilty for killing Jesus. I don’t doubt that at all. The message Peter preached was the gospel – which has the power to save – they then ask after believing the gospel what they needed to do. Peter told them.

When David committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband, Uriah, killed, did God act outside of the sacrificial, tabernacle plan?
While Jesus walked this earth, he freely forgave sins, based on faith—but without the baptism of John and without compliance with the sacrifices demanded by the Law of Moses. Even on the cross, Jesus forgave the sins of the thief (Luke 23:40-43), saving him based on faith. Once again, God was forgiving outside the covenant.
God clearly made exceptions in the Old Testament and I think he will today – don’t know why He wouldn’t. Is the age of exceptions over? Did God make these exceptions for a limited purpose? Or is it God’s nature to make exceptions?
In each dispensation God has establish a well-defined covenant as to how he will forgive the sins of those with faith in him — and in each dispensation God has repeatedly made exceptions, frequently granting forgiveness to those with penitent faith outside the specific terms of His covenant.

If the Apostle Paul were listening to this conversation, I believe he would be very befudled. On the one hand, he would be distraught due to the fact that some (i.e., my CoC herritage) have turned God’s gift of baptism (and specifically their understanding of baptism) into a legalistic mechanism by which God’s hands have been tied and are no longer free to redemptively bless those who seek after Jesus but for one reason or another have not shared in baptism exactly as God intended baptism to be experienced and understood. On the other hand, he would be distraught due to the fact that others (i.e., many modern evangelicals) have so divorced the soteriological importance of baptism to the point that when the gospel is preached/taught, baptism is no longer even mentioned (opting instead for a prayer).
Somewhere in between these two contemporary and extreme positions is the truth regarding baptism as it relates to salvation and this relation is equally related to discipleship. However, as long as these two extreme positions continue to exert themselves, they only accomplish two things…1) hardening each side in its own dogma, and 2) polarizing each other from each other rather than unifying the body of Christ.

I believe baptism is a beautiful act that symbolizes our faith. I don’t think any Christian should be baptized just to get wet. Water baptism has meaning to us it shows who we have already put our faith/trust in who has already saved us-our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Lee, I would guess Mr. Robertson’s take on this would be “rebaptism” and he might sight a couple examples from scripture, which you may already know.
Your point is a valid one and one that could be made in Acts 2:38. Perhaps some would say they were “born from above” upon faith in Christ, then ask what to do. I am not saying I hold this position, but can see a case for presenting this.

Gentlemen, most people can probably appreciate that upholding one’s integrity can be lonely at times, but few can associate power play with sorrow forever. Likewise, not many people can see beyond the material or beyond the silly games played on here. So, please let’s get back on track!
Few would argue that power play can deprive us of peace in our daily life as well as in today’s world. If we want peace for ourselves, we can start with a simpler life with less fighting over small matters.

So was Matthew recorded incorrectly? Since both Robbers are recorded a Mocking Jesus in this account, and one robber is recorded as repenting in Luke’s account.
So you have a few choices here, either Luke or Matthew recorded things wrong, or they are both right. If you decide that the Bible is accurate then lets consider how both of those statements work together to show what really happened.
So if both are right how is it that a man who was baptized according to the CoC (there is zero proof of that btw) was recorded a mocking Jesus in Matthew? Secondly how is it that Jesus does not say anything to him about being a follower to rebuke him for failing him?

I have studied and frankly was shocked when I started taking apart Acts 10 and comparing Acts 11′s comments on Acts 10.
Like it, lump it, thump it or dump it the truth is still the truth. Peter’s comments about Acts 10 are not backed up by the event, thus I was left with two choices, to either believe that he willfully misspoke about the events, or that his view of things colored what he saw as happening in Acts 10. There is a third option that you can consider and that is the recorder of Acts incorrectly wrote what the Angel said to Cornelius.
Acts 10:22 22They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and (AA)God-fearing man well spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, (AB)was divinely directed by a (AC)holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear (AD)a message from you.”
swyhsh – in any of it’s forms is not spoken of in Acts 10 by the Angel or Cornelius period end of sentence. Did Peter know more then the Angel???? The bottom line is, and the question still remains, how is a man who is not saved and going to hell have his prayers heard, since God does not hear the prayers of the prayers of sinners according to John 9:31. God did not have to tell Peter everything he was doing nor the condition of Cornelius salvation for that matter the point of that sequence was to keep the Jews from killing Peter and the Gentiles, and I suspect Peter was as amazed as anyone else that the Holy Spirit fell as it did.
How is a hell bound man have his prayers called a memorial to God? If Cornelius died before Peter preached he would have gone to hell according to your doctrine, how is it that a sinners prayers are even heard first and secondly considered so valuable they are a memorial to God?

There is a question and there are many about that, the Thief and the Gentiles entry are only a couple. We can get into the codex differences where Matthew 28:19 appears to be rewritten by some well minded people to include trinity baptism. ie. name of the father the son and the Holy Spirit. Have you never asked why Peter did not use those words? They were commanded yet not used and only Jesus name was used. It is because Matthew 28:19 appears to be rewritten to counter the gnostic threat that was occuring that called God the Father Evil and Jesus a good God. Thus this passage made it quite clear they were together and working together.
Or we can walk into the ending of Mark and how many codex do not include the longer ending. Hmm so since the Holy Spirit is gone, I don’t think we can say Jesus is Lord can we?
But if we can say it and the BIBLE is accurate then we can say it only by the Holy Spirit, so we are not brothers again why?
Last night while I was somewhere public, someone came up to me and thanked me for taking on Johnny Robertson.
I only wish to make note of this because said person stated that “Johnny Robertson is the Prince of Lies”.
Whether he will acknowledge it or not, that is likely the best reputation that Robertson – and the rest of his cult too – will ever enjoy so long as they are in this area.
Oh come on Chris, just because Mark pretends to invite people to Church only to record them while trapping them into saying their church is not important for salvation.
While at the same time teaching their church is important for salvation Johnny teaches people are the church and not the building.
And just because they send Micah out to the post office to ask to put their track in after finding out it is illegal to have tracks in the place. So while Micah is lying about why he is there because he knows he can’t have a track because of the law we know they were trying to catch someone there who was helping the Baptist church.
And just because Johnny defends himself claiming to use taping and recordings for defensive purposes, while crowing each time he tempts and then catches someone in sin, that certainly can’t be a lie can it?
Or the most used one, Johnny continues to claim he only wants to ask a question, ye the has made it clear on the blogs that he is out to destroy other churches.
Surely it is all us false believers who are causing this perception about them, and surely it can have nothing to do with their actions can it?

How do I know this?
My Dad went to a barber shop today and a bunch of the guys were talking about how much of a “nutcase” Robertson is. Apparently having to do with how Robertson tried to crash a Baptist church service earlier this week. One of the regulars said Robertson would be taken away by police if he ever came to where he went to church at.
I’d trust the conversation in a barber shop as a gauge of how things really are more than just about anything else in a local community (well, other than conversation in churches, and funeral parlors ‘course…

Anyone SERIOUSLY believe Robertson is being feted with praise and respect by ANY legitimate folks around here? LOL!
All this is Crap! You people need to do a little more research on what it is you believe. Water Does not save you and does not Show any symbol WHATSOEVER Of a so called “Faith” to your “God”. and you people cannot Deny the fact that ever god/goddess has a Name. Yours is not that special his name is NOT GOD! Its Jehovah! Do some Friggin’ Reasearch before you make a Website about what you don’t know!
